Home Air Conditioning Repair

The majority of problems that most people have with their air conditioners are a matter of the correct maintenance and cleaning schedule. If you make sure that you routinely clean the grill and filter of your air conditioner, it'll live longer, cool better, and use less energy than if it was left dirty. Particles can build up in the filter, choking the ducts and rendering your air conditioner useless. However, this is one aspect of air conditioning repair you can easily do yourself. Just clean the filter and your air conditioner will be as good as new. There are plenty of other simple repairs you can make yourself, too. Before you call in an expert, make sure you've checked everything that you're capable of doing on your own.

The most common problems that air conditioners have are pooling water, a rattling noise when your air conditioner shuts down, poor temperature control, and inefficient cooling. You can repair many of these issues by yourself. Check your manual to see what it says about minor air conditioning repair that you can implement easily. If you don't have a manual, here are some general tips.

Before you decide to try air conditioning repair of any kind, you must turn off the power or unplug your air conditioner. It's easy to take off the grill on a window unit. Some central air systems will have the fan attached to the grill, however. Take care if you're opening a larger air conditioner. If you need to disconnect the fan, be sure that no wires come loose. Remember the sequence of any wires you need to disconnect from the main board while removing the fan. This is so you'll be able to put the air conditioner back together easily at a later time.

If your air conditioner doesn't turn on at all, it might be because there's a broken or tripped fuse. Anyone can replace one of these. Just check your manual, or a general book on air conditioning repair to find out how. Always check to see if there's a problem fuse before you call a tech.

Water accumulation under the front of an air conditioner can be due to leakage, or, in window air conditioners, to a need to reseat the air conditioner in its window. Do this carefully, to keep it from falling. Thermostats can be harder to repair. A bad one can make the air conditioner turn off or on unexpectedly, making your room very uncomfortable.

If you think that a thermostat or heat pump needs replacing, be sure to call a tech instead of trying to fix it yourself. Of course, if the idea of opening up an air conditioner fills you with dread, you can always play it safe and call a repair person first. Just know that there are plenty of little things you can usually fix on your own. Check your manual to find out more.
